The P5 can measure the rheology of material at various physical locations on plant. As shown in the diagram below , the P5 can sample material from different locations. The multiple benefits are described briefly below for the option of sampling at each point.
1. Ex-reactor sampling. In this position, the P5 on-line rheometer is unrivalled. It connects
directly to the plant reactor via a Porpoise sampling and de-activation system
that transports the polymer powder automatically. The P5 gives the Viscosity or Melt Flow
Index results of the powder typically every five minutes. This
allows the plant controller to inject the correct amount of primary modifier
(such as hydrogen) using a Porpoise control algorithm. 2. Pre-extruder sampling. If the plant de-activation is fast enough, the sample can be taken before the extruder. The benefits are both reactor control and feed forward control of the extruder, where for example peroxide may be added for modified MFI grades. 3. Post extruder sampling.Where quality control is required mid-stream, the P5 connects directly to the product stream (pellets) and provides product classification prior to silo storage. This scheme has also been used successfully for extruder feedback control. 4. Silo samplingAnother option is a P5 sampling from the silo outputs. This is a strong quality assurance tool giving product traceability and documented knowledge of the quality of product supplied to customers. |
