PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The P3 extracts molten polymer from the extruder and conditions the melt. The melt is then passed through a gear pump. The gear pump isolates the flow from the pressure fluctuations found in the extruder. The gear pump also sets a flow rate for the melt into 1 of three possible dies. The pressure drop developed in each die is used to calculate the rheological properties of the material. Multiple flow rates can be applied to obtain a wider range of the rheology data.

COMMERCIAL BENEFITS

Accurate and precise rheological results are obtained in almost real time for the material in the extruder. This saves the need for manual testing in a laboratory and the associated problems of cost and time delays. Significant reduction in off-spec material is also gained.
